Save Latin Village
London, Summer 2018
These photographs are from time spent in Pueblito Paisa, commonly referred to as the Latin Village, in Seven Sisters in the summer of 2018. Latin Village is under the sustained threat of demolition and redevelopment - which has sadly become more of a reality with the recent turn of events - that would uproot dozens of families from their community and place of work. As well as this, many of the traders have been subject to harassment and abuse by the council’s market facilitator - who incidentally has vested interests in the proposed 'redevelopment' plans.
The space is vital on so many levels for the Latinx and broader local community. Aside from containing many individual businesses and locations for people to meet within, the market also acts as a key community hub, where parents who may work busy schedules of multiple jobs can leave their children after they’ve been at school, where they can play with friends in a safe and home from home environment. Traders also assist each other in their accounting and business affairs, giving advice to one another on a regular basis.
